Max North This heartbreakingly beautiful music must have been born of Ukraine's troubles of 2014. It is all the more poignant now, in 2022, against the unspeakable cruelty being visited on the people of that country. Do something for Ukraine. Favorite track: Burial, When the Sun Sets.

k-vector The song Her Name in a Language of Stars carries a surreal ambience that slows the world down. Every action within the environment seems to slow down, causing me to appreciate how simple, yet complex the world really is. Amazing album, allowing me to tune out the world. Nicholas Trandahl What a wonderful surprise! Endless Melancholy's newest full-length is the first solid step in a new direction that the music has been taking in the last few releases. Oleksiy has pretty much completely done away with classical arrangements in lieu of ambient, drone, and samples that washes over the listener in mystical waves. I adore this new direction for Endless Melancholy. For fans of Desolate Horizons and 'Celestite' by Wolves in the Throne Room. This is the best album I've heard this year! Favorite track: Like Ships Without Anchors.

about

"Her Name In A Language Of Stars" is a fourth full-length album by Endless Melancholy. It was released on 27 July, 2015 via Hidden Vibes (CD + digital).

Reviews:

The album begins with a slow music box melody and a distant ambient wash, like stars twinkling in front of the Milky Way or Aurora Borealis ~ a perfect reflection of the album cover. This is Endless Melancholy‘s fourth full album and finest to date. The man who began his career as a solo pianist has now stretched his wings and is approaching the stratosphere. Fly that high, and others will notice ~ Benoît Pioulard, Will Bolton and Desolate Horizons join the artist (Oleksiy Sakevych) for a trio of remixes. To honor the beauty of the set, Her Name In A Language Of Stars is even available in a clothbound edition (akin to Sonic Pieces’ limited pressings).

That opening track (“Tiny Box of Melodies”) is hard to top, as it develops into a thick yet inviting drone by the time it concludes. Other tracks go right to the thicker sounds before backing off, allowing sub-melodies and chords to shine through the grey like pinholes in cardboard. A post-rock influence is apparent in “Daydreaming”, which layers its ambience in the same way that post-rock layers its guitars. The piano, once primary in the mix, is not apparent until the sixth minute of “Like Ships Without Anchors.”

clothbound! While “Their Hearts Erased” appears in three versions – the original and two remixes – the album’s best track is the 15-minute “Burial, When the Sun Sets”. Perhaps it was too good to remix. From soft origins, it rises into a gentle morass of orchestral timbres, enveloping the listener in an ever-growing wall of gentle loops and restrained feedback. All sense of time is lost as the track unfolds; one could listen for hours. The soft landing alone takes two minutes, careful not to injure in any way. The ground is as cushioned as the clouds.

Endless Melancholy no longer seems melancholic ~ an odd irony. This music gazes at the sky, hopes and dreams. We may be witnessing the birth of a new star.

Oleksiy Sakevych is a man of many talents and many colours. His work as a musician is multi-faceted, to say the least, with his skills split across three equally exciting, and equally different monikers. As part of Sleeping Bear he lends his talents with guitar and keyboards to create instrumental, post-rock epics, and as a member of the Hidden Vibes label he works tirelessly to release and promote ambient and modern classical albums in both digital formats and pristine, physical limited editions, and yet what he is probably best known for, is being the genius behind ambient maestro Endless Melancholy.

Beginning in November of 2011, Endless Melancholy has now blossomed into a stunning example of sonic soundscapes and serene ambient noise. The latest release, the romantically titled ‘Her Name In A Language Of Stars’ marks the fourth album for Sakevych, and continues the vibrant combination of modern classical sounds and sparse aural arrangements in stunning fashion. Beginning with a slow, building melody that mingles with restrained ambient tones, the opening track ‘Tiny Box of Memories’ serves as an inviting and prolonged welcome as it develops into a heavy drone and consume all focus, while its successor, the divine ‘Daydreaming’ cuts far quicker to the point. Lighter, and glistening with more complex rumblings of undertones towards the end, its clear already that Sakevych has taken his sound to an altogether higher tier.

‘Like Ships Without Anchors’ is arguable the most engrossing track on the album, with it’s evolving tapestry of sounds not once losing step across its extensive run time of just over ten minutes. Throughout the track melodies ebb and flow between soft piano keys, and all throughout there is a series of deeply evocative notes that sway the listener and breathes life into the song. The same can be said for the title track, and for the incredibly tactile epic of ‘Burial, When the Sun Sets’, which begins softly, almost subtly, before erupting into a maelstrom of beautifully orchestrated delirium. It’s an involving, and often even delicate journey, with each element of the song bringing about a new direction and a distinct emotion in an undeniably brilliant way.

What follows after the brilliance of ‘Burial, When the Sun Sets’ is a series of remixes by Benoît Pioulard, Wil Bolton and Desolate Horizons, who each add their own distinct style to ‘Their Hearts Erased’ and ‘Tiny Box of Memories’, and while the further evolutions of Endless Melancholy’s sound are thoroughly enjoyable, they stand as mere bystanders to the anthemic qualities of Sakevych’s original work.

Simply put, ‘Her Name In A Language Of Stars’ is an incredible world of bristling ambient textures and delectable piano led melodies contained neatly within six beautiful, original compositions and three innovative remixes. It’s the perfect continuation of Sakevych’s art, which sees the same brilliant spirit developed into a refined palette of evocative tones, and it’s simply breathtaking.

Mit Her Name In A Language Of Stars (Hidden Vibes) betritt Oleksiy Sakewych Neuland.

The album opens quietly with 'Tiny Box Of Memories'. Soft, soothing soundscapes floath gently through the air in perfect ambient tradition. Yet, here you can clearly notice a post-rock background in the way the track builds up, swells and become heavier. Some harsh guitar drones appear and the whole does indeed become something that Godspeed! You Black Emperor could become jealous about. 'Daydreaming' follows that example and is indeed best to be enjoyed with your eyes closed and your mind wandering.

The wandering may continue on 'Like Ships Without Anchors', drifting in an ocean of restful sounds. This song has a bit more melody, hidden beneath the layers of synths and drones. It too swells, grows and evolves and it too doesn't need any percussion to keep the listener interested. Title track 'Her Name In A Language Of Stars' perfectly combines all previously mentioned elements and becomes a great epitome of what Endless Melancholy is capable of.

I quite like the harsh guitar shrieks which appear every now and then. They enhance the post-rock feeling on this album but they also decrease the classical approach. In a way, the music on this album has very little to do with modern day composers like Olafur Arnalds or Nils Frahm, although 'Their Hearts Erased' is a beautiful and magical piece of modern day classical music, entwined with soothing sounds. 'Burial, When the Sun Sets' is the longest piece and also the darkest one. \ This is another beautiful composition, born out of the usual ingredients.

Endless Melancholy - I know the feeling having snagged the headphone wire in the wheel of my chair two times since this record began.

The music isn’t exactly going to lift my mood but for fans of enormous swathes of ambient post-rock you might just get your kicks here. I can’t find a single shred of information within the CD so let’s forget all about song titles (one would imagine they are bleak). The opening track is one humongous drone which gets more distorted as it goes on with spark’s of noise dripping everywhere. Everything is grand - as the next track starts up I imagine Stars of the Lid and Sigur Ros collaborating on a soundtrack to a film about volcanoes. It’s massive yet sad if those two things can work together successfully. I hear the sound of seagulls through a reverb unit so we’re kind of in new age territory but these slabs of sound are nothing if not tuneful and they tug pretty neatly at that part of you that wants to drive a VW Passatt across the Himalayas. Get the lad some TV soundtrack work pronto.

If that’s not sold it to you then there’s some remixes tagged on the end by Benoit Pioulard, Wil Bolton and Desolate Horizons. I’ve since located the track titles and they are called things like ‘Her Name in a Language of Stars’.

Her Name In A Language Of Stars

Burial, When the Sun Sets

Her Name In A Language Of Stars

(c) Pied Paper, piedpaper.blogspot.com/2015/11/endless-melancholy-her-name-in-language.html

The first time I heard Her Name in a Language of Stars, on headphones in my study on a Sunday afternoon, I thought it was pleasant but undistinguished. Admittedly, distinction in an ambient album is a tricky business; but at its best, you can hear the unique qualities of the particular creator, can feel the music could not have been made by anyone else. I put the album on again one day while I was working, and was halfway through before the music registered. An inauspicious beginning.

But the third time I listened was a few days before the one-year anniversary of the death of a very close friend. I was staring at a piece of paper and feeling precisely nothing, that hollow sensation that is part and parcel of grief. The silence becoming too loud, I thought I would put on something soft, something not too intrusive, and so I clicked on “Burial, When the Sun Sets,” the sixth and longest track on Stars, and prepared to be soothed. I found, instead, that I was being taken on a journey through my own unattended sorrow. Yes, the constant fuzz here is a little overspent, but the shape, draped carefully over fifteen minutes, is subtle but has the power to transport.

The band’s name seems banal, irretrievably emo, but the album’s title and sonics are more evocative. Dreamy and textural, Endless Melancholy’s fourth full-length release, Her Name in a Language of Stars, sweeps over the ears like a gossamer blanket. Already about 47 minutes, a respectable album length, Her Name in a Language of Stars is fleshed out to just over an hour with three bonus remixes by Benoît Pioulard, Wil Bolton, and Desolate Horizons. The new album extends Endless Melancholy’s self-billed “minimal piano and ambient sounds” with cinematic soundsweeps and a dash of post-rock noise. It’s an album whose listenability and gentle movement, in the end, outweigh its flaws.

Oleksiy Sakevych, Endless Melancholy

“Tiny Box of Memories,” the first track and one of the best, offers percussion in the form of music-box tones and gets structure from a scrape of dark cinematic pads nearly five minutes in. “Her Name in a Language of Stars” sweeps one out of a reverie with shifting chord patterns; again, change is introduced towards the end, as the music turns deftly into a sparkle of light across water, almost visible in the listening. The conversational samples in “Their Hearts Erased,” coupled with a mellow retro-synth lead, effectively combat an over-familiar background sound.

On the other hand, “Like Ships Without Anchors,” pretty as it is with its bird-cries and somnolent synth pads, effectively evokes the stillness of ocean, but lacks a distinctive voice. In general, what appears to be over-reliance on a narrow set of synth sounds on the album lends a sameness to the texture between some of the tracks here, making one wish the creator had spent a little more time exploring the boundaries of his kit.

But there’s no denying the loveliness of the feel, and there is certainly value in consistency in an album that might be played as an aural background to a busy life. In that context, Her Name in a Language of Stars is calming, settling, peaceful. In the context of grief, it’s an unexpected wake-up call to the depths to which loss can reach.

Endless Melancholy needs no introduction. Under Oleksiy Sakevych’s careful hands, he has been the driving force of modern classical and minimalist pursuits in the recent years. Through his music, I found a deep apprecation in the likes of Debussy and Satie, and all respectively play the piano with elegance. It is also no surprise that for Endless Melancholy’s fourth full-length album there was a significant change in his sound, focusing more on ambient soundscapes.

If you followed Endless Melancholy’s music leading up to this album, you would know the direction this album was headed with his releases of Ambermixes and Wide As The Golden Ocean. Ambermixes serves as a compilation of ambient remixes from a talented list of artists and projects. Wide As The Golden Ocean was a split with him and Desolate Horizons (whom I’ve also reviewed previously on the site), which featured two songs, predominantly ambient and drone. He’s headed in a direction more grounded in synthesizers, samples, and field recordings.

While one might worry about this dramatic change from the norm, the execution of Her Name In A Language Of Stars is quite remarkable. The album begins with beautiful metal clanging of a music box, both nostalgic and mystifying. “Tiny Boxes of Memories” features a beautiful melody with layers of ambient textures that hang over you like a dark night, void of light but the stars above. This astral theme is constant throughout the album, and here it keeps you floating, relying on soft piano keys to bring you back down to solid footing.

The title track is perhaps the most elegant, soft, and pure. The layers dance and swirl like a balloon caught in the wind with an ever-growing atmosphere billowing slowly beneath it. The song flourishes with a subdued piano elegantly carrying the track to the end. The switch to ambient presented Endless Melancholy with a challenge, and he couldn’t simply rely on his skills on piano to create this album. Now, the piano must be utilized in small amounts, carefully picking when it should and shouldn’t be used. “Her Name In A Language Of Stars” is a perfect example of this, highlighting the subtlety of emotion that a piano can bring in ambient music.

Going with this, the lengths of the songs have been some of the longest in all of Endless Melancholy’s catalog. Like Ships Without Anchors and Burial, When The Sun Sets clock in at ten and fifteen minutes respectively, and give way to more drone and cinematic features to this release. Both songs take their time to develop, slowly rising and falling like calm, open waters. This is more apparent on Like Ships Without Anchors, as the theme is centered around the peaceful abyss the ocean can bring. Burial, When The Sun Sets is a lamentation, an ode to the moon and the starry sky that rests around it, covering our horizon like a blanket. The motif of this shared night sky isn’t accomplished easily, but all the elements combined on Burial, When The Sun Sets give forth a telling resemblance of this image musically.

This album isn’t over when the last song ends, however, as Endless Melancholy teamed up with a star-studded list of artists to remix the songs on it. While usually I don’t listen to remixes as much as original content, Benoît Pioulard, Will Bolton, and Desolate Horizons brought their own unique talents to these tracks. Benoît Pioulard’s remix is open and pensive, Will Bolton’s is dark and ominous; something completely out of norm for this release, and Desolate Horizon’s is loud, forceful, and drowning with textures.

Her Name In A Language Of Stars is an expression and appreciation of the world around you. It encourages an external view of reality, finding the unchanging and everlasting beauty of a sunset, a starry night; constants in our daily life we do not always take the time to value. Endless Melancholy cherishes these moments, captures them in a jar, and opens the lid for a listening ear. This album can be seen as a step back, a reminder to relax and enjoy the world that creates such splendor and awe for us to view. This theme is the driving force of Her Name In A Language Of Stars, heightening the gifts the Earth has left for us.

“Her Name In A Language Of Stars” brings me the sight and sound of warm, serene summer days and nights, youth and miracle. I’m glad that Endless Melancholy go with a more atmospheric direction at this time, with rich layers of drones, samples and field recordings. The album contains 6 tracks and 3 remixes, all represents great musical vision and sensitivity. The album quietly opens with short music box passages and its metal clanging, which recall nostalgia and elegance. This theme is continued throughout the album, with most of the tracks are filled with hazy, drifting ambience. Gentle loops, distant field recordings, slow, emotional retro synth and delicate tones of string instruments reflect a sense of beauty and simplicity. Modern classical piano is not a notable element in “Her name In A Language Of Stars”, but it still works effectively in those tracks that need something storytelling, e.g. “"Like Ships Without Anchors". The post – rock influence in this album brings a little bit darkness and mystery, but still much dreamy and hopeful.

Her Name in a Language of Stars is a deep longing, a meditative ache that expands without end. It’s ambient at its best, a work dense with sound, layers upon layers that slowly take over your entire listening range, but instead of passively aiming at being attended by different levels of consciousness it very quietly intrudes, drawing out ever-so-slight melodies that will wrench your heart. And it will fill it with awe, with a grand bittersweet feeling that will not go away immediately – it will only gradually wash away from your soundscape, seemingly going somewhere else… this melancholy is endless because there’s always a horizon to get lost in.

Her Name In A Language Of Stars
